The Rousers & The Thought
Holland's The Rousers were formed when brothers Cocke and Jan de Jong, inspired by The Ramones and the Damned, started a band playing cover songs. Two years later they joined forces with brothers Bonne and Wieb Zigtema and bass player Rob Marienus. They combined the energy of punk and the melodies of 60's beat music and invented what they called "new beat". They released the LP "A Treat Of New Beat" (Torso, 1979) which combined jagged guitar riffs, vocal harmonies and witty lyrics like into two minute pop gems. "Magazine Girl" was the first single and was well received but got banned from the radio because of the topless girls on the sleeve. After a disappointing second album "Touched" (Torso, 1980) The Rousers broke up.
In 1982 most of the band went on to form The Thought. The band still relied on it's 60's influences but added psychedelics and bombast. They had an unexpected underground club hit in the United States with the a cover of the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much Dream Last Night" which led to a major label deal and their well received second album. After the release of their third and last LP the band broke up in 1986.
Cock de Jong is currently playing in The Shavers.

Erreg goeie band die Rousers, heb ze in 1978 in Groningen gezien en het is nog steeds een van de beste concerten die ik heb gezien. Is ergens magazine girl nog te dwnen?
Goodgawshamighty, I had nearly convinced myself that these guys were a hallucination if it were not for a pitiful, battered cassette that has somehow survived into the 21st century. Ya think anyone will ever re-issue that sucker - or should I just suck it up and digitize it myself before my copy disintegrates?

As stated above, the Rousers were an amazing live band. I was lucky enough to see 'em at least a dozen times and they were always on the ball. The second LP suffers from a rather weak production, but most of those song sounded A-OK in a live setting. Their debut was recently re-issued over here in Holland with bonustracks etc. Well worth checkin' out!
verscheidene keren zag ik de rousers optreden, in jeugdhonken en oude boerderijen voor plattelandsjongeren. zoveel dynamiek heb ik sindsdien niet meer op een podium gezien.onvergetelijk en van grote klasse!

Hello, thanks for this blogsite! I remember buying 'The Thought' album from a used record shop,...just randomly as was my practice back in the days, looking thru albums that looked interesting in the bargain bin :) Sharing the song "Secrets of the Heart & Stranded with a stranger on my facebook page again as a 'memory'.
